SND STL offers Data Visualization Graphics Workshop in partnership with IRE
We’re busting-at-the-seams excited to announce our next partnership and pre-conference workshop, a Data Visualization Graphics Workshop with the Investigative Reporters & Editors. The day-long workshop will take place on Thursday, Sept. 29th, before the SND STL conference begins. You can register for the Graphics workshop on the same page that you can register for the conference, right here. Also as part of the partnership with IRE, their members can now get $100 off registration for SND STL!
Data Visualization Graphics Workshop
This hands-on workshop will take you from soup-to-nuts in data manipulation and visualization. It’ll start off teaching where to find public data, how to clean, organize and prepare it, including some Excel training, then you’ll experiment with various tools and best practices for data visualization working with examples on your computer through the workshop. Required for participation: Bring your own laptop with Microsoft Excel installed.
Graphics Workshop Instructors:
Jaimi Dowdell
Jaimi Dowdell joined Investigative Reporters and Editors as training director in October 2008. Before that she was computer-assisted reporting editor at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for more than three years. Her duties included obtaining and analyzing data; training staff on CAR and investigative techniques; and maintaining the newspaper’s online data center. In addition to her work at the Post-Dispatch, she taught a CAR course for Washington University in St. Louis.
8/2 UPDATE:
Sarah Cohen
Sarah Cohen holds the Knight Chair at Duke University, specializing in creating and curating new tools for reporting through The Reporter’s Lab. She was previously a reporter and editor at The Washington Post, where she shared in the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting, the Goldsmith Prize and other national journalism awards. She was elected to the Investigative Reporters and Editors’ board of directors in 2010. Cohen was a guest panelist at VisWeek in 2009 and 2010, and is a co-creator of TimeFlow, an interactive and visual timeline and chronology tool for investigators.
Derek Willis
Derek Willis is a member of the Interactive News group at The New York Times, where he builds political and congressional Web applications and contributes to Times reporting from the Washington bureau. He is currently working on The Times’ coverage of the 2012 elections. Previously he worked at washingtonpost.com and The Washington Post, where he helped build one of the first congressional votes Web applications by a news organization. Derek worked with a team at The Center for Public Integrity that developed the first comprehensive collection of data on so-called 527 political committees. Prior to the Center, Derek worked for five years at Congressional Quarterly covering campaign finance, elections and the House of Representatives. So at least he’s been consistent with this political stuff. He began his career as a research librarian at The Palm Beach Post. Website: http://blog.thescoop.org/
